Changing Mossberg 500 barrel
I just got a mossberg 500 this morning with a 24" rifled barrel. I want to put a 18 1/2" barrel on it.
the have them at a local shop with sights for 99. two questions I have are, is the barrel easy to change ? should i get a rifled barrel or not? it is primarily for home defence, but i would imagine that i might use it for deer/turkey hunting if the necessity arises. or should I just leave it with the barrel it came with??? in case anyone in wondering price it was 389. thanks |
Re: Changing Mossberg 500 barrel
Don't get a rifled barrel in the 18".....use the other one if you need it for hunting.
Changing is simply a matter of twisting the thumbscrew on the far end of the shell holder tube (under the barrel ) and remove the barrel....it will come right out in your hands. No tools required. Slip the new barrel into the receiver section, and tighten the screw. You're in business. 30 second changeout. |

If its for home defense don't get the rifled barrel. Thats for deer slugs. Effective, but costs more, takes more skill and not as good at close range. Get a modified or Improved choke, not a full choke. If you still can't get the barrel off come back here. Well tell you. it's easy though. sb |
Re: Changing Mossberg 500 barrel
If you have a 24" rifled bbl.....do not buy another rifled bbl....get a smooth bore as your second bbl. - even better if it has changable choke tubes....get a cylinder or improved cylinder choke.

You will want the Improved cylinder or medium choke for home defense. I would stay with the longer barrel too, but 18 will work fine. s |
Re: Changing Mossberg 500 barrel
Can The manufactuer just ship out the barrel???
Or dose it have to be FFL??? T |
Re: Changing Mossberg 500 barrel
A barrel is just a gun part.....anyone can ship to anyone.
The only restricted items are the serialized, numbered recievers/frames. Choke is the end of the barrel where it is constricted. It determines what percentage of the lead pellets will stay in a 30" circle at standard of 30 yards. Below is data for shorter and longer yardages as well. For steel shot - need less choke.....a mod acts like a full. Percentage Of Shot Inside 30" Circle CHOKE 20 Yds 30 Yds 40 yds Cylinder 80% 60% 40% Skeet 92% 72% 50% Improved Cylinder 100% 77% 55% Modified 100% 83% 60% Improved Modified 100% 91% 65% Full 100% 100% 70% |

I can change a barrel on a Mossberg in under 20 seconds.
